Annual five day “Chalon dans la Rue” festival, with music, theatre, and street performances

Well, that was interesting. An initially planned 10-day stay turned into three weeks in Chalon-sur-Saône. We were finally able to resume navigation on July 25 after being “grounded” during unprecedented July flooding of the Saône and Rhône rivers and surrounding tributaries. Our flooding was a downstream effect of the catastrophic flooding in Belgium and Germany, although we were fine on our boat as we rose 15 ft on our floating dock in the marina. Three days of non-stop rain were torrential, and the amount and size of downed trees, branches and variety of flotsam and jetsam rushing furiously past us along the current was impressive. Our slumber was consistently interrupted as loud bangs and thuds slid along the hull with passing tree hulks. Our planned interim cruise in the area with some visiting friends from the States was also relegated to Plan B, as we embarked upon a mini road trip via rental car instead, once the rain subsided. The sun, current, and river level finally cooperated on their next-to-last-day with us. We were able to give our friends a brief taste of canal cruising as we ventured out on a nearby day trip. Our last to-final-night ended with a bang as a monumental thunderstorm pounded through at 2 a.m. with 90-100 mph winds for at least a half hour: more downed trees, flotsam and jetsam, and various torn boat canvases flying about (but not ours!). Nevertheless, the city of Chalon-sur-Saône shouldered on with its annual 5-day street music, performance, and theatre festival, leaving us with unique memories of this sojourn.

• Road trip to the famous Hospices de Beaune (historic medieval hospital for the poor); Château Guédelon, begun in 1997, an ongoing construction of a replication of a medieval castle, using the same methods, materials (and fabricating the construction materials themselves: mortar, quarried stone, beams… ), and tools from that time.

C'était intéressant. Un séjour initialement prévu de 10 jours s'est transformé en trois semaines à Chalon-sur-Saône. Nous avons finalement pu reprendre la navigation le 25 juillet après avoir été "cloués au sol" pendant des inondations, sans précédent pour un mois de juillet, de la Saône, du Rhône et de leurs affluents. Notre crue était une conséquence, en aval, des inondations catastrophiques en Belgique et en Allemagne. Bien que nous n'ayons rien à craindre, notre bateau s'est élevé de plus de quatre mètres, amarré au ponton flottant de la marina. Après trois jours de pluies torrentielles ininterrompues, la quantité et la taille des arbres abattus, des branches et toute une variété d'objets flottants emportés par le courant fou étaient impressionnants. Notre sommeil était constamment interrompu par des bruits sourds d’arbres se frottant contre la coque. Notre croisière provisoire prévue dans la région avec des amis américains en visite s’est donc transformée en un mini voyage en voiture de location. Le soleil, le courant et le niveau de la rivière ont finalement coopéré lors de leur avant-dernier jour avec nous. Nous avons pu donner à nos amis un bref aperçu de la croisière lors d'une excursion à proximité, sur le canal du centre. Notre avant-dernière nuit s'est terminée par un orage monumental qui a éclaté à 2 heures du matin avec des vents de plus de 130 km/h pendant au moins une demi-heure : encore des arbres abattus, des débris et des tauds de bateaux déchirés qui volaient dans tous les sens (mais pas les nôtres !). Néanmoins, la ville de Chalon-sur-Saône a poursuivi son festival annuel de musique, de spectacles et de théâtre de rue pendant 5 jours, nous laissant des souvenirs uniques de ce séjour.

We have finally finished with the Rhône and re-found the joy of easy cruising along the Saône River—a mode more similar to our earlier experiences on the Canal du Midi. The truth is the Rhône is not a piece of cake for a small engine (30 hp) canal boat like ours, and thus not terribly enjoyable. It was a pill to swallow, but we knew that well beforehand. Some days on the water it was like spinning our wheels, watching the grass grow as we battled very strong counter currents, and oft-present headwinds. Decent harbors for a night were few and far between, making long mileage days against these elements more painful! We were on a mission to get that section behind us, and once we reached Lyon, HALLELUJAH— a HUGE sigh of relief! Now we are discovering some charming hidden gems along the Saône River and some of its tributaries, like La Seille. Currently in Chalon-sur-Saône, we’ll be here for about two weeks before heading farther north in eastern France and accompanied by some friends on board for a short section.

Recap:

• Valence to Lyon over three days with a few stops at various strategically placed public docks along the river. Despite slow Covid re-opening, Lyon was exhilarating with new vibrant architecture, a majestic presence along the Rhône and Saône Rivers that bisect and meander throughout the city, breathtaking historical sites, cuisine, and an amazing bike path network that spider-webs the whole length and breadth of Lyon from the busy riverside “centre ville” to the hilly heights.

• From Lyon, the “fork in the road” (locally referred to as the “Confluence” where the Rhône and the Saône meet), we embarked upon the Saône River; an overnight stop at Burgundy-famous Mâcon; discovery of Tournus, village on along the river with a very ancient history; a two-day detour on the smaller Seille River tributary, discovering the delightful town of Louhans, known for its 157-arcade main thoroughfare.

• Currently taking a breather in Chalon-sur-Saône where some friends will join us, here are some figures to digest thus far: We’ve traveled over 950 km (approx. 600 miles) of waterways and bobbled up and down 174 locks.

• The Rhône and the Saône are just filled with swans! They are ever-present and often with wee little ones. The Saône also welcomes many herds of happy cows, as they munch their way through fresh riverbed greenery.

Nous en avons finalement terminé avec le Rhône et avons retrouvé les joies des croisières faciles et tranquilles le long de la Saône, un mode plus proche de nos expériences précédentes sur le Canal du Midi. La verité est que le Rhône n'est pas un jeu d'enfant pour un petit moteur (30 cv) de bateau de canal comme le nôtre, et donc pas terriblement agréable. C'était une pilule à avaler, mais nous le savions bien à l'avance. Certains jours sur l'eau, nous avions l'impression de tourner en rond, de regarder l'herbe pousser alors que nous luttions contre de courants et vents contraires. Les ports étaient rares, ce qui accentuait les distances à parcourir et rendait les journées longues et pénibles ! Nous devions mettre cette section derrière nous, et une fois Lyon atteint, nous avons enfin pu, HALLELUJAH! Maintenant, nous découvrons de charmants joyaux cachés le long de la Saône et de certains de ses affluents, comme La Seille. Actuellement à Chalon-sur-Saône, nous y resterons environ deux semaines avant de nous diriger plus au nord, dans l'est de la France, accompagnés de quelques amis à bord pour une courte section.

Récapitulatif :

- De Valence à Lyon en trois jours avec quelques arrêts à divers quais publics stratégiquement placés le long du fleuve. Malgré la lente réouverture due au Covid, Lyon a été exaltante : une nouvelle architecture vibrante, une présence majestueuse le long du Rhône et de la Saône qui traversent la ville en deux et en plusieurs méandres, des sites historiques à couper le souffle, de la cuisine, et un incroyable réseau de pistes cyclables qui sillonne Lyon du centre-ville animé au bord du fleuve jusqu'aux hauteurs vallonnées.

- De Lyon, la "bifurcation" (appelée localement le "confluent" où le Rhône et la Saône se rencontrent), nous nous sommes embarqués sur la Saône ; une halte à Mâcon, célèbre ville bourguignonne ; la découverte de Tournus, village au bord de la rivière à l'histoire très ancienne ; un détour de deux jours sur le petit affluent de la Seille, à la découverte de la charmante ville de Louhans, connue pour son artère principale de 157 arcades.

- Actuellement en pause à Chalon-sur-Saône où des amis vont nous rejoindre, voici quelques chiffres à assimiler : Nous avons parcouru plus de 950 km de voies navigables et franchi 174 écluses.

- Le Rhône et la Saône sont remplis de cygnes ! Ils sont omniprésents et souvent accompagnés de tout petits. La Saône accueille également de nombreux troupeaux de vaches joyeuses, qui se frayent un chemin dans la verdure fraîche du bord de la rivière.

This is actually the headquarters for Euronews.

The riverfront is host to an eclectic group of barges, houseboats, etc. This is the “boat chapel.”

Sunday mass is actually on Saturday, 6 p.m. at the Boat Chapel.

There is even a shipchankler boat/boutique.
